Plan your Trip to Sarajevo
A melting pot of cultures and religions for centuries, historic Sarajevo has emerged from the dark years of the tragic war in the late 1990s as one of Europe’s most exciting capitals. Fly with Aegean Airlines to the hospitable “Jerusalem of Europe”, to discover a unique mixture of Ottoman culture and Central European elegance in the heart of the Balkans.
First time in Sarajevo
Every corner of Sarajevo is a testimony to its rich and complex history.
- Start your tour of Sarajevo from the heart of the Old City, the 16th-century Ottoman commercial district of Bascarsija. Narrow, cobbled lanes, covered markets and the workshops of old craftsmen, countless mosques and inns, bustling open-air bazaars and traditional cafés create an enchanting, fairy-tale picture of the East. Here you will find some of the city’s most important and symbolic monuments, such as Pigeon Square with the beautiful old Sebilj fountain and Gazi Husrev Bey mosque.
- Discover the city’s exquisite Austro-Hungarian architectural heritage in the eclectic buildings of the Marijin Dvor district, along the pedestrianised Ferhadija shopping street and in the wonderful 19th-century neoclassical houses along the River Miljacka. Don’t miss two of the most important buildings of the period: the architectural masterpiece of the Vijećnica (1896) and the splendid Academy of Fine Arts (1899).
- The grand Gazi Husrev Bey mosque is the country’s most important Islamic building. Built in 1530 by the leading Persian architect of the era, Adjem Esir Ali, it is home to wonderful carved wooden pieces and works of calligraphy.
- Visit the stunning “Tunnel of Hope”, a section of a tunnel 800 metres long that the inhabitants of Sarajevo built with much fortitude beneath the airport in order to secure supplies during the siege of 1992-1996.
- Cross the historic Latin Bridge and take a stop at the point where the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife were assassinated on 28 June 1914. Learn all there is to know about the event that sparked the First World War at the in situ Sarajevo Museum 1878-1918.
- Visit the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to admire the Sarajevo Haggadah, an illuminated Jewish manuscript of the 14th century, of inestimable value.
Explore Sarajevo
Discover the beauties of Sarajevo through alternative routes.
- Take tram no. 3 to the historic spa town of Ilidža, a favourite resort of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. From here you will be able to enjoy an unforgettable romantic stroll in a vintage horse-driven coach along the Velika aleja road, lined with chestnut and plane trees, 3.5 km long, and admire the luxury Old World villas along its two sides. At the end of the road a beautiful natural park, the Vrelo Bosna, awaits you, a verdant complex of little islands and wooden bridges, at the springs of the River Bosna.
- Clamber up the green hills that surround Sarajevo for a wonderful panoramic view over the city. The sites of Zuta Tabija, Bijela Tabija, Zmajevac and Vidikovak are among the most popular “balconies” that look out over Sarajevo.
- The quartet of stunning “Olympic” mountains – Trebević, Bjelašnica, Jahorina and Igman – around Sarajevo offer a wide range of sporting and recreational activities all year round. From ski slopes of all kinds in the winter, to hiking, cycling, climbing and paragliding in the summer.
- Wander up the steep lanes of the Muslim neighbourhoods of Alifakovac, Vratnik, and Bistrik, soaking up scenes and images with an Eastern flavour.
- Enjoy an afternoon stroll along the popular pedestrian area of Vilsonovo lane, beneath the linden trees on the right bank of the River Miljacka. Don’t forget to take a stop at the famous themed Caffe Tito, dedicated to the historic leader of the former Yugoslavia.
Cosmopolitan, relaxed and culturally vibrant, Sarajevo promises continuous surprises to its visitors throughout the year. Sarajevo Winter, the international cultural festival held in February, and the excellent Sarajevo Film Festival in August showcase the city at its best. Book your tickets with Aegean Airlines and get to know the charming capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina from up close.
