Plan your Trip to Nantes
A city both historic and modern, Nantes performs a fascinating balancing act between past and future – reminding us of the adventures of the city’s most famous son, Jules Verne! Science fiction stories from the 19th century which seem to come to us from the future. Fly with Aegean Airlines to the lively metropolis of western France which inspired the famous Round the World in 80 days! Located at the confluence of the Rivers Loire and Erdre, Nantes was founded in 70 BC by Celtic settlers and attracted the attention of Julius Caesar by virtue of its strategic position as a passage between the Atlantic and the interior of Gaul.
Formerly the capital of the Duchy of Brittany, the city flourished in the 18th century thanks to its shipbuilding industry and maritime trade. It did, however, earn notoriety as the French port most heavily engaged in the slave trade, until the abolition of slavery in 1848. The contemporary city does not attempt to avert its eyes from this dark chapter in its history, and there is a moving monument on the Quai de la Fosse, on the bank of the Loire, commemorating the campaigns against trafficking. The city is also a centre of activism in defence of the rights of man.
The old shipyards, and even the city’s historic biscuit factory, have been transformed into iconic venues in a new urban landscape of leisure and culture. Book for a flight to this exciting and creative capital of the Loire-Atlantique region.
Nantes
The birthplace of Jules Verne and some of the finest novels of science fiction. Some call Nantes “the new Paris”, thanks to its rich arts scene and its creativity. First stop: the splendid Castle of the Dukes of Brittany, a landmark of the city and home to its history museum. Continue your walk through the beautifully-preserved historic centre and relax in the Botanical Garden, a green oasis with thousands of species of flowers! A visit to Les Machines de L'île, a surreal theme park dedicated to Jules Verne, is a must!
