Plan your Trip to Brest
Spread out over the coasts of a fine natural harbour at France’s most westerly point, Brest is a charming city with a glorious, centuries-old naval and military history and a lively student town with a youthful character. Fly with Aegean Airlines to the heart of North Finistère and have an unforgettable experience at the “ends of the earth”.
First time in Brest
Every corner of Brest is inextricably bound to the sea and its proud naval history.
- A landmark of the town, 17 centuries old, the imposing castle dominates at the confluence of the River Penfeld and the Roadstead (bay) of Brest, offering a wonderful view over the iconic moveable Recouvrance bridge. The fantastic National Musée de la Marine is housed in the castle, taking you on a journey through the city’s legendary naval and military history.
- On the bank opposite the castle, the medieval Tanguy Tower (14th century) houses a fantastic museum on the history of old Brest.
- Don’t leave Brest without having taken a trip to the heart of the oceans at the impressive Océanopolis, a park of underwater discoveries and research that is unique in Europe, with three huge thematic zones and over 10,000 sea creatures.
- Enjoy a stroll through the famous Conservatoire Botanique National de Brest in the beautiful Stang-Alar valley, an oasis with thousands of rare trees and plants.
- Visit the Musée des Beaux-Arts and admire, among other pieces, exceptional works of Breton nautical painting as well as the excellent collection of the Pont-Aven School (1886-1895).
Ideas for excursions around Brest
- Brest is the ideal starting point for discovering the stunning natural landscapes of Northwest Brittany.
- Travel 23 km west of Brest, to the coastal village of Plougonvelin to admire the wonderful Pointe de Saint-Mathieu lighthouse and the fascinating Gothic monastery on the hill of the cape. The star of the region, however, is the imposing tidal island of the Fort de Bertheaume, which is joined to the dry land by a foot bridge above the foaming waves.
- Opposite the Roadstead of Brest, the panoramic peninsula of Crozon is an area of rare beauty that is well worth exploring.
- Discover the legendary Pays des Abers, or Côte des Légendes, to the north of Brest, the land of tides and Breton fjords, with the countless lighthouses and strange medieval fishing villages.
Summer is the ideal season for visiting Brest. This is the year of the great naval festival Les Tonnerres de Brest (13-19 July 2016), which takes place every 4 years. Book your tickets at www.aegeanair.com and enjoy the largest gathering of sailing ships in the world in the magical Roadstead of Brest.
