Synonymous with the birth of the famous children’s toy Lego, Billund is a small town in the middle of the Danish hinterland that lives and breathes according to the rhythm of neighbouring Legoland. Legoland: The Disneyland of Denmark was created in Billund in 1968 and is the country’s second most popular site after the Tivoli Gardens. The landmark in the Park is the wonderful Miniland, a microcosm of the world that brings to life famous cities and emblematic monuments, such as Big Ben and the Taj Mahal.

Givskud Zoo: Givskud Zoo was created in 1959 as a park exclusively for lions and today it is a wonderful safari park with a plethora of wild animals, from rhinoceroses and guerrillas to elephants and giraffes. Its lion colony is the largest in Denmark. The latest addition to its magical routes is the giant dinosaur park. You can explore by car, bus or foot.

Sculpture Park: With 17 permanent sculptures made by famous Danish artists in this collection, the open-air sculpture park of Billund is an oasis of vegetation and modern art, for young and old. Don't miss the wonderful “Little Prince by Jens Galschiøt.

Jelling Monuments: The monumental 10th-century complex of Jelling is considered the “birth certificate of Denmark”. The work of the Viking king Gorm and his son Harald Bluetooth, it is comprised of two granite rocks with inscriptions in runes, two huge royal tombs and a church. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Koldinghus: Built in the early 13th century, the old royal castle of Kolding brings to life in a unique way the medieval history of the Danish kingdoms. Here the visitor can dress as a royal attendant for a day or enjoy a game of skittles (a kind of medieval bowling), reliving in an interactive way the days of the court of King Charles IV.

Trapholt Museum of Modern Art & Design: One of the most important and stunning museums of modern art and design in Scandinavia, nestled within a wonderful sculpture park with a view over the Kolding fjord. The collection includes, among other items, the largest collection of chairs in Scandinavia. Don’t forget to visit the amazing Cube flex summerhouse, designed by the famous architect Arne Jacobsen.

Geografisk Have: In the heart of Kolding, this botanic garden and, along with it, experience park is an eccentric combination of rare flora from all over the world, animal refuge and children's play area. The most impressive sight in the park is the Kolding Miniature Town, a reconstruction of the town of Kolding as it was in 1860-1870, on a scale of 1:10. Thus far, 360 of the 700 buildings have been built and the project is due to be completed in 2026.

Karensminde Agricultural Museum: Travel back in time to the rural Danish life of the 18th and 19th centuries in this completely interactive museum. Take part in milking the cows, picking potatoes, selecting eggs, enjoying a trip in a horse-drawn carriage or making traditional wooden toys.

Ribe Cathedral: The oldest cathedral (13th century) in Denmark is the most imposing landmark in the medieval town of Ribe. Admire the modern decoration and mosaics by Carl Henning Pedersen, discover the tomb monuments dedicated to the powerful figures of the land, and climb up to the peak of the Borgertårnet tower for a panoramic view over the whole town.

Take a trip to nearby Vejle, one of the best towns in Denmark for shopping. Stroll along the central pedestrian road and the picturesque little lanes that surround it, where you will discover over 300 shops. You can find all the large clothing chain stores, many specialised boutiques, art galleries as well as the largest collection of children's shops in the region.
Don’t forget to visit the Bryggen shopping mall with 80 stores and imaginative concept shops. Root out bargains in the Saturday market in Norretorv Square and explore the beautiful farm shops in the idyllic farms around Vejle, for excellent quality delicatessens and handicrafts.
Take a stop at verdant Kolding, the capital of design in Jutland. Explore 9 pedestrian shopping areas with amazing speciality shops, go window shopping and gaze at the inspired interiors of the designer boutiques, and definitely take a stop at the Kolding Storcenter, the largest shopping mall in Jutland, with over 120 shops. Bargain hunters can visit the open-air antique markets at the weekend (Haderslevvej & Sdr. Ringvej).
Other interesting shopping routes are in the historic centre of the town of Grindsted (for handmade textiles made using Danish techniques, and antiques), the commercial pedestrian road and open-air market (every Wednesday and Saturday) of Esbjerg as well as the markets of medieval Ribe (especially for Danish arts and crafts and design objects from the time of the Vikings).

In the area around Billund you will have the chance to discover traditional Danish cooking. The whole region is a gastronomic paradise of slow food and organic cuisine. A visit to the local farms is a must, to try genuine dishes in their rustic restaurants. Take a stop at the historic brewery of Kløvermarken in Billund to sample the famous beer made from mead.
For a larger range of gastronomic experiences, from European gourmet cuisine to ethnic and seafood, go to lively Vejle. Explore the atmospheric cafes of the picturesque Latin Quarter and Sondertorv Square. - Jydefesten: The annual Sønder-Omme festival is overflowing with local colour, genuine Nordic spirit and people of all ages in a six-day festival (3-8 May) of music, colourful parades, open-air markets, workshops and funfairs. Here you will be to hear some of the best local bands of Jutland.
- Vorbasse Market: With a tradition that goes back to 1731, the annual market for horses and used goods in Vorbasse has evolved into one of the most important social events of Denmark. Over 300,000 people gather here between 21-23 July in order to admire the beautiful stallions and charming ponies, to ferret out rare handicrafts and to enjoy the amazing routes through the funfair, for young and old.
- Jelling Musikfestival: One of the largest open-air rock festivals in Denmark with an exceptional line-up of top Danish artists as well as international bands, such as Franz Ferdinand. In 2017 the festival will be held from 24-27 May.
- Trekantområdets Festuge (Triangle Region Festival): Discover the cultural traditions of southern Jutland in this major thematic festival held by seven municipalities in the famous Triangle Region. The programme includes music, theatre, art, dance, lectures and children’s events, spread out over the historic buildings, squares and natural landscapes. This year's festival has the title of “Transitions” and will take place between 25 August and 3 September 2017.

Getting to and from the airport
Aegean Airlines lands at Billund Airport, 2 km from the city centre. Here you will find duty-free shops, numerous clothes boutiques, an exclusive Lego store, specialist shops selling Danish design, and a bookshop. There are also 3 currency exchange bureaus and ATMs, restaurants, cafes and patisseries selling Danish sweets. There is a free Wi-Fi service at the airport for internet access. The cheapest and easiest way to reach Billund is to take bus number 43 (Vejle - Billund Lufthavn - Billund), which connects the airport directly to the centre of Billund, with a stop at Legoland. Buses depart approximately every 30 minutes from 4.05 until 0.05. The journey time is 8 minutes.
