Plan your Trip to Bergen

Framed by the towering Seven Mountains and surrounded by a stunning natural landscape, Bergen is an archetypical Norwegian city with colourful wooden buildings and a vital relationship with the sea. Founded in 1070 by king Olav Kyrre, it was the first capital of Norway and a significant commercial centre, leaving the city with a legacy of beautiful buildings and a cosmopolitan air. Bergen is also an ideal starting point for exploring one of the most magnificent natural attractions in the world – the famous fjords – and masses of tourists are drawn here each year. Book your tickets to Bergen with Aegean Airlines and get to know the warm heart of the European North.

Exploring Bergen

The whole town is one must-see attraction, with fine museums, monuments and a vibrant lifestyle!

  • Wander around Bryggen, Bergen’s historic neighbourhood and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which stretches along the eastern side of the port of Vågen. Cobbled streets, colourful wooden buildings with high triangular 12th century-style cookie-cutter roofs (although those existing today were built in the 18th century), pretty shops, restaurants and the laid-back atmosphere of a seaside resort, make for the loveliest promenade in the city.
  • See how the Viking kings lived at Håkon’s Hall, the immense 750-year-old hall in the Bergenhus fortress complex, where royal receptions and ceremonies are still held today. Adjacent to it, the Rosenkratz tower, Norway’s most important renaissance monument, was the residence of King Eirik Magnusson, the last king to hold court in Bergen.
  • Visit the Bergen Art Museum next to lake Lille Lungegardsvann in downtown Bergen, to admire an excellent collection of 18th and 19th century masterpieces by artists such as Munch, Picasso, Miró, Rodin, Klee.
  • Don’t miss a visit to Troldhaugen, summer residence of famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, now a museum.
  • Stroll through the picturesque outdoor museum of Bergen’s Old Town. Fifty-five wooden houses, examples of 18th, 19th and 20th century architecture, bring the history of what was once Europe’s largest wooden city to life, while actors narrate or perform stories from past eras.

Things to do in Bergen

The stunning natural environment is ideal for getaways!

  • For a breathtaking panoramic view of Bergen, take the funicular to the summit of Mount Fløyen. Apart from providing a marvellous view of the city and the fjord, this is a great location for delightful hikes along well-marked trails, through dense forests and beside crystal-clear lakes.
  • Bergen is a gateway for exploring Norway’s famous fjords. Don’t miss the chance to see one of nature’s wonders up close. Book a trip at any one of the various travel agents you will find in the city. Note that the famous Sognefjord, the largest fjord in Norway and at 200 km the 3rd longest in the world, is relatively near Bergen and there are organised daily cruises that will take you there.

Picturesque, historic and lively, Bergen wows visitors with its majestic natural surroundings. Book your tickets with Aegean Airlines and experience the top-level service of the best regional airline in Europe.
